HVAC Repair for the Northern Shenandoah Valley

Brick Street Plumbing Heat & Air delivers AC repair Winchester, VA homeowners can count on through the hottest stretch of a Valley summer, with technicians available 24/7 and no overtime fees after hours. Whether the system blows warm air, will not turn on, or keeps tripping the breaker, a licensed HVAC technician tests the electrical parts, refrigerant circuit and airflow, then tells you what failed and what it takes to fix it. You approve the work before anything is replaced.

Winchester is an independent city surrounded by Frederick County, and homes here run from brick rowhouses and Victorian-era houses around Old Town to newer subdivisions along the edges of the city and out toward Stephens City. Older houses often got central air added decades after they were built, sometimes with ductwork squeezed into attics or closets. Newer homes tend to have heat pumps or split systems with variable-speed equipment. Our technicians are factory-certified on the equipment they install and work on both. Visit our Winchester page for more.

VALLEY SUMMERS

Why Air Conditioners Work Hard in Winchester

Summer in the Shenandoah Valley brings long humid stretches, and an air conditioner here does two jobs: lowering temperature and pulling moisture out of the air. When a system struggles, the house often feels clammy before it feels hot. That clamminess is an early warning that airflow or refrigerant charge is off. Older Winchester homes add their own challenges. Attic ducts in a house built long before central air can run hot and lose cooling before it reaches the rooms. Upper floors in tall historic houses warm up fast. A ductless mini split is sometimes a better answer for a stubborn upstairs room than pushing the main system harder.

Parts We Repair Most Often

These cover the bulk of the cooling calls we take around Winchester and Stephens City.

Capacitors and Contactors

Heat is hard on these electrical parts, and they fail more in summer than any other time. A failed one stops the outdoor unit cold.

Dirty Condenser and Evaporator Coils

Pollen, cottonwood fluff and dust clog the coils and cut cooling. Our coil cleaning restores airflow and heat transfer.

Refrigerant Leaks

Low charge means a leak somewhere. We locate it, repair it when practical, and recharge to the manufacturer's specification.

Blower and Fan Motors

Weak or noisy motors move less air. We test amperage and bearings before recommending a replacement.

Condensate Drains and Pumps

Humid air means a lot of water to drain. Clogged lines and failed pumps cause overflow and shutdowns.

Fantastic service - bought a home with a very old hot water heater, and Brick Street’s quote came out to be substantially less than the other plumbers I spoke with. No compromise on service for the price, though - Mary was incredibly responsive and friendly when it came to scheduling a time to install the new water heater, and Tylerr did an outstanding job getting the water heater set up and running. Overall very easy to work with, reasonably priced, and professional!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Service – Highly Recommend Brick Street Plumbing Water Heaters I recently had my entire HVAC system replaced after my old unit had been in my home for over 20 years. I requested an estimate through Home Depot, and they referred me to Brick Street Plumbing. Water Heaters, From beginning to end, my experience was excellent! Brian came to my home, carefully explained the different options available, and walked me through the entire installation process. He was very professional, knowledgeable, patient, and always available to answer my questions. Communication with Brian was outstanding throughout the entire project. One of the best parts of the installation was that they were able to relocate my water heater into an unused space in my basement. This made the entire HVAC area much more spacious, organized, and accessible. I am extremely happy with how everything turned out! I also want to recognize Austin, Gmo, and Dani for their excellent work. They were professional, hardworking, respectful of my home, and paid great attention to detail. Update 10/2/2026 The manager got in touch with us and promptly sent out a service technician that was able to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot the issue with our thermostat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We got our AC replaced by Brick Street through Home Depot. After a week our AC wasn't working so we had to put in a service call. They came out and fixed it. Then our heating wasn't working and we put in a service call to have a tech come out to and troubleshoot but their HVAC department has been non responsive via email or voice mail. We are not able to get in contact with them at all. Will not be doing business with this company again. Very poor customer service.

NEXT STEPS

Repair Now, Plan Ahead

Most AC problems in Winchester are repairs, not replacements. When a compressor fails on an aging system, or a unit still runs on phased-out refrigerant and has developed a leak, we will lay out a repair quote and a replacement quote side by side. Learn more on our AC repair page, or see the full service area we cover across Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. Between repairs, a spring tune-up through our AC maintenance service is the simplest way to keep a Valley summer from catching the system off guard. We clean the coils, test the capacitor and contactor, clear the condensate drain and check refrigerant pressures, so worn parts get replaced on your schedule instead of during a heat wave.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Winchester house feel humid even with the AC running?
An air conditioner removes moisture as air passes over the cold indoor coil. If the coil is dirty, refrigerant is low, the blower runs too fast, or the system is oversized and shuts off before it has time to dehumidify, the house can feel damp and cool at the same time. A technician can check coil temperature, airflow and run times. For basements and older homes, a whole-home dehumidifier can also help.
Can you add central air to an older Winchester home without ductwork?
Yes, though the best approach depends on the house. Ductless mini splits mount small indoor heads on walls and connect to an outdoor unit through a small opening, so they avoid tearing into plaster and trim. High-velocity systems with small flexible ducts are another option. In some homes, attic space allows conventional ducts to serve the upper floor. We look at the structure and your goals before suggesting a layout.
How often should I change my AC filter in the summer?
Check it monthly during the cooling season and replace it when it looks gray or clogged. Basic one-inch filters often need replacement every one to three months, and homes with pets, nearby construction or heavy pollen may need it more often. Thicker media filters last longer. A clogged filter cuts airflow, which can freeze the coil and make the system work harder, so it is one of the easiest ways to prevent a breakdown.
Why is my AC making a loud buzzing sound outside?
A loud buzz from the outdoor unit often means the contactor is failing or the compressor or fan is trying to start without help from a good capacitor. Loose wiring and debris in the fan can also cause it. If the unit buzzes without starting, turn the system off at the thermostat, because running it in that state can overheat the compressor. A technician can test the capacitor and contactor and replace whichever has failed.
Do you service AC systems in Stephens City and the rest of Frederick County?
Yes. We work in Winchester and the surrounding Frederick County communities, including Stephens City. Our technicians handle repair, maintenance and replacement for central air conditioners, heat pumps and ductless systems throughout the area. When you call, give us your address and a quick description of the problem so we can confirm coverage and get the right technician scheduled.
