Central Air That Keeps Up With a Virginia Summer

Brick Street Plumbing Heat & Air handles air conditioner repair and installation in Leesburg, VA, along with the tune-ups that keep a system from failing in the first place. If your AC is blowing warm air, running nonstop, leaking water or making a noise it never made before, call us at any hour. A licensed technician will find the cause, explain it in plain terms, and tell you whether the unit is worth repairing or ready to be replaced.

Most of our AC calls come from Loudoun County and the rest of Northern Virginia, and we also cover towns in nearby Maryland and West Virginia. We work on all makes, including common brands like Lennox and Bryant, and on both ducted central air and ductless systems. The jobs range widely: a capacitor replacement on a condenser that hums but will not start, a coil cleaning for a system that has lost its punch, or compressor repair when the heart of the outdoor unit is struggling.

WARNING SIGNS

Six Things Your AC Is Trying to Tell You

None of these fix themselves. Most get more expensive the longer they run.

Weak or Uneven Cooling

The house never reaches the setpoint, or upstairs stays warm while the basement is cold. Low refrigerant, dirty coils and airflow problems are the usual suspects.

Rattles, Grinding or Vibration

Loose panels, a failing fan motor or a compressor under strain can all show up as new noise. Catching it early often means a smaller repair.

Musty Smell From the Vents

Mold or mildew on the coil, a clogged condensate drain, a dirty filter or standing water in the drain pan. We check each one.

Water or Refrigerant Leaks

Water around the air handler usually points to the condensate line. Oily residue on the lines can mean a refrigerant leak that needs repair, not just a recharge.

Bills Climbing for No Reason

When usage has not changed but the bill has, the system is often running longer to do the same work.

Ice on the Lines or Coil

Frost on the copper line or indoor coil means restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system off and let it thaw before calling.

REPAIR OR REPLACE

When a New Air Conditioner Makes More Sense

Plenty of AC problems are straightforward AC repair jobs: a contactor, a capacitor, a clogged drain, a fan motor. Replacement comes into the conversation when the compressor fails on an older unit, when refrigerant leaks keep coming back, or when the system has needed several major repairs in a short span. If you go with AC installation, we size the new equipment to the house rather than copying the old nameplate, check that the ductwork and indoor coil match, and set refrigerant charge and airflow at startup. A properly matched system cools more evenly and runs shorter cycles than one that is too big or too small.

UPKEEP

What a Spring Tune-Up Covers

Regular AC maintenance is the cheapest way to avoid a July breakdown. A visit includes cleaning or checking the condenser and evaporator coils, clearing the condensate drain, testing capacitors and electrical connections, checking refrigerant pressures and confirming airflow. Cleaner equipment also helps indoor air quality, since a damp, dirty coil is where musty smells start. Pair the visit with a fresh filter and the system starts summer in good shape. Frequently asked questions

Why is my air conditioner running but not blowing cold air in Leesburg?
The most common causes are a failed capacitor or contactor on the outdoor unit, a clogged filter, dirty coils, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check that the filter is clean and the outdoor unit is running. If the fan outside is still and the unit hums, the capacitor is a likely culprit. If the outdoor unit runs but the air stays warm, a technician needs to check refrigerant pressures and the compressor.
Should I turn off my AC if the lines are frozen?
Yes. Switch the thermostat to off and set the fan to on so the ice melts faster, and put towels down near the indoor unit in case the drain pan overflows. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor. Ice almost always comes from poor airflow, such as a dirty filter or coil, or from low refrigerant. Once it has thawed, call us so we can find out which one caused it.
Can you just add refrigerant to my air conditioner?
We can, but a system that needs refrigerant has a leak somewhere, because refrigerant is not used up during normal operation. Topping it off without finding the leak means you will be paying for the same problem again later. Our technicians look for the leak, explain where it is and whether it can be repaired, and then recharge the system to the correct level.
How often should central air be serviced in Northern Virginia?
Once a year, ideally in spring before the hot weather arrives. Summers here are long and humid, so central air does a lot of work, and a yearly visit catches worn capacitors, dirty coils and clogged drains before they cause a breakdown. Change the air filter every one to three months in between, more often if you have pets or someone in the house has allergies.
My AC is leaking water inside. Is that an emergency?
It is worth dealing with quickly, even if the cooling still works. Water near the indoor unit usually means the condensate drain line is clogged or the drain pan has cracked, and the overflow can damage ceilings, floors and drywall. Shut the system off if the water is spreading. Because our technicians are certified in both plumbing and HVAC, we can clear the line and also check the drain it empties into.
